Search Engine Optimisation Key Terms

Dynamic URL - a web address that can change. Usually contains a collection of 'strange' characters.

Flash - technology used on the internet for animations and graphic intensive sites.

Frames - a feature supported by most modern web browsers than enables the web author to divide the browser display area into two or more sections (frames).

Image Map - links to other pages are put into images using 'hot spots'.

Keywords - a word used by a search engine in its search for relevant web pages.

Meta Tag - a special HTML tag that provides information about a Web page.

Reciprocal Linking - most Internet search engines also take into account the number of web sites which contain links to your web site; the more hyperlinks to your site found, the higher up in the search engine rankings.

Robot/Spider - used to feed pages to search engines. It's called a spider because it crawls over the web.

Some common site indexing problems

When designing for search engine optimisation there are many factors for consideration. Here are just a few of them.

  • Frames - sites that make use of frames are very difficult for the search engines to index. If your site uses frames you should consider re-designing it.
  • Dynamic URLS - some search engines cannot understand these URLs and will either ignore them or get very confused.
  • Macromedia Flash - flash sites may look very nice but are very difficult to index if poorly implemented. The problem is that flash encapsulates all that great keyword text into a .swf file which is hidden from search engines.
  • Image Maps - many search engines get stuck in the first link of an image map which prevents the indexing of the rest of your site.

These are just a few of the common problems that we see when clients complain of poor search engine ranking. Fortunately, all of these problems can be resolved with a careful re-design of your site.
